Met haar onderzoek is Vollmer op zoek naar manieren om de recycling van plastic grootschaliger en duurzamer te maken. Met behulp van chemische processen kunnen plastics makkelijker omgevormd worden tot hoogwaardigere producten dan met traditionele technieken. Chemische recycling stoot echter meer CO2 uit en kost veel warmte. Vollmer’s onderzoek probeert ze die temperatuur omlaag te brengen. Daarmee wil ze nieuwe, groenere materialen ontwikkelen en de plasticberg verkleinen.

Haar studies voert ze uit bij de onderzoeksgroep Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis van de Universiteit Utrecht en bij het Advanced Research Center Chemical Building Blocks Consortium. Dit ARC-CBBS is in 2016 opgericht als samenwerking van de universiteiten van Utrecht, Eindhoven en Groningen met grote chemische bedrijven als AkzoNobel, Nouryon en Shell.

Vollmer promoveerde in 2019 aan de TU Delft op de conversie van methaan naar andere stoffen.

Dr. Ina Vollmer is assistant professor at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science at Utrecht University.

Through her research, Vollmer is looking for ways to upscale plastic recycling using techniques that are more sustainable. Chemical processes can transform plastics into products of higher quality than traditional techniques may do. However, chemical recycling emits more CO2 and consumes a lot of heat. Vollmer's research aims to lower these temperatures. Thereby, she wants to develop new, greener materials and reduce the plastic mountain.

She conducts her studies at the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis research group of Utrecht University and at the Advanced Research Center Chemical Building Blocks Consortium. The ARC-CBBS was established in 2016 as a collaboration between the Universities of Utrecht, Eindhoven and Groningen with major chemical companies such as AkzoNobel, Nouryon and Shell.

Vollmer obtained her PhD at TU Delft in 2019 on the conversion of methane to other substances.
