Fear and the apocalypse

Pop Culture Matters
Why is the end of times such a popular theme in movies, TV shows and books? With media scholar Dr Laura Copier.

If you want to know what we were scared of in a certain time period, watch a movie! From nuclear bombs in de 50s, pollution in the 70s, to meteors in de 90s. Of course there are always recurring fears such as aliens, zombies and natural disasters. Why do we find depictions of the end of times so fascinating? Media scholar Dr Laura Copier (UU) studies the enduring presence and appeal of apocalyptic narratives in Hollywood. What do blockbusters like Armageddon,The Day After Tomorrowand Arnold Schwarzenegger's End of Dayshave in common with the biblical telling of the Apocalypse? What can we learn from this similarity in themes, characters and symbols?
