Als onderzoeker is hij verbonden aan de focus area 'Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights'. Zijn expertisegebied is Zuid-Amerika, met een focus op Brazilië. Hij houdt zich bezig met de antropologie van religie en nieuwe media in stedelijke gebieden. Op het moment werkt hij aan een onderzoek naar de cultuur van illegaliteit. Hij kijkt welke processen bijdragen aan de sociaal-politieke autoriteit van criminele gangs. Oosterbaan heeft verscheidene publicaties op zijn naam staan. Hij studeerde culturele antropologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, waar hij ook promoveerde.

Dr. Martijn Oosterbaan is an anthropologist, researcher and teacher of Cultural Anthropology at Utrecht University.

As a researcher he is connected to the 'Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights' focus area. His main area of expertise is Latin-America, especially Brazil. He studies the anthropology of religion and new media in urban contexts. Oosterbaan is co-applicant of the NWO funded research project: 'The Popular Culture of Illegality: Criminal Authority and the Politics of Aesthetics in Latin America and the Caribbean', on the aesthetic practices that shape the socio-political authority of criminal gangs. Oosterbaan has published in multiple renowned journals. He studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, where he also obtained his PhD.
