In haar onderzoek richt ze zich op de wederzijdse afhankelijkheid van kunstgeschiedenis met de geschiedenis van materialen, technieken en wetenschap. Ze promoveerde aan de Universiteit Utrecht op haar proefschrift Oil and the Translucent: Varnishing and glazing in practice, recipes and historiography, 1100-1600.Bijzonder aan haar onderzoeksaanpak is dat ze gebruik maakt van praktische reconstructies om het maakproces binnen de kunst te onderzoeken.

Tevens werkte ze aan verschillende onderzoeksprojecten aan het Max Planck Instituut, waaronder Crafting Splendor and Examining Light.The Artisan's Contribution to the Study of Optics,en Golden Wood and Panels of Porphyry. Appraising and Examining the Art of Ersatz in Pre- and Early Modern Times. In 2014 kreeg ze een onderzoeksbeurs van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) voor haar project Art and Deception: functions, techniques and effects of material mimesis.

Art historian Dr Marjolijn Bol is researcher and post-doctoral researcher at Utrecht University.

In her research she focusses on the interdependence of the history of art with the history of materials, techniques and science. She received her PhD with her dissertation Oil and the Translucent: Varnishing and glazing in practice, recipes and historiography, 1100-1600. Special to her approach is the making of historical reconstructions to investigate the appearance of materials or objects that only came down to us in writing (i.e. recipes) or survived in poor condition.

She also works on several researchprojects at the Max Planck Institute, among which Crafting Splendor and Examining Light.The Artisan's Contribution to the Study of Optics,en Golden Wood and Panels of Porphyry. Appraising and Examining the Art of Ersatz in Pre- and Early Modern Times.
