Professor Lisa Bortolotti is philosopher of Cognitive Sciences and Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham.

Bortolotti is interested in the interaction between health, wellbeing, rationality, and agency. She studies the limitations of human cognition and human agency. She is particularly interested in faulty reasoning and irrational beliefs, delusions, confabulations, distorted memories, poor knowledge of the self, unreliable self-narratives, self-deception and other positive illusions.

From January 2022 onwards, Bortolotti will be the editor of Philosophical Psychology, a scientific magazine that publishes articles on cognitive sciences that aims tot strengthen the links between philosophy and the psychological sciences.

From 2014 to 2019, Bortolotti led the research project Pragmatic and Epistemic Role of Factually Erroneous Cognitions and Thoughts (PERFECT). This project investigated whether delusional beliefs and distorted memories can also be listed as symptoms of psychiatric conditions.

Bortolotti was educated at the University of Bologna, King's College London, University of Oxford and the Australian National University, and worked briefly at the University of Manchester before beginning at Birmingham, where she has been a lecturer, senior lecturer and now professor.

----
