Kessler specializes in the social history of Russia and the Soviet Union. He works at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam, where he has been a Senior Research Fellow since 2010.

In 2022, Kessler published his book Russia – land that wants to be different. In the book he shares personal experiences of his life in Russia and Russian modern history. Why have the years since the collapse of the Soviet Union failed to bring the Russians what they expected?

From 2002 to 2016 Kessler was based in Moscow, where he taught Russian social and economic history at the New Economic School, in addition to his work at the International Institute for Social History.
