Keysers doet onderzoek naar empathie. Zijn droom is om te begrijpen wat ons sociaal maakt. Om die vraag te beantwoorden bestudeert hij hoe het brein ons in staat stelt de gemoedstoestand van anderen waar te nemen. Er zijn hersengebieden die in actie komen als we bepaalde handelingen doen of emoties ondergaan. Interessant is dat sommige van deze hersengebieden ook actief worden bij het waarnemen van die handelingen of emoties bij anderen. We delen intuïtief de anders emoties en gevoelens. Door te onderzoeken hoe dit precies werkt en welke mechanismen hier achter zitten hoopt Keysers meer inzicht te krijgen in empathie en het disfunctioneren ervan bij psychiatrische stoornissen.

Neuroscientist Christian Keysers is head of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and works as professor Social Neurosciences at the University of Amsterdam.

Keysers studies empathy. His dream is to understand what makes us social. To answer this question he studies how our brain enables us to experience other people's actions and emotions. Certain parts of the brain come in action when we do something or feel a certain emotion. Interestingly, some of these brain regions also come into action when we see others doing something similar or experience a similar emotion. Intuitively we share the emotions and feelings of others. By studying the mechanisms behind these neural processes, Keysers hopes to gain more insight in empathy and its dysfunctions in psychiatric disorders.
