Daarnaast is Whitehead verbonden aan de W.H. Duncan leerstoel voor Volksgezondheid en is ze het hoofd van een programma van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO): Collaborating Centre for Policy Research on the Social Determinants of Health. Onderzoekers in dit programma doen onderzoek naar de sociale oorzaken van een slechte gezondheid en ziektes, en de negatieve gevolgen van chronische ziektes. Samen met internationale partners kijken ze naar de mogelijkheden waar gezondheids- en socialezekerheidsstelsels zichzelf kunnen verbeteren om slechte gezondheid en ongelijkheid onder de bevolking te verminderen.

Whitehead heeft veel onderzoek gedaan naar de sociale ongelijkheid bij gezondheid en gezondheidszorg, met in het bijzonder wat er tegen deze ongelijkheid gedaan kan worden. Dankzij dit onderzoek is ze betrokken geweest bij verschillende Engelse en internationale initiatieven om deze ongelijkheid op het gebied van gezondheid te bestrijden.

Margaret Whitehead works at the University of Liverpool as an epidemiologist and as Head of the Department of Public Health and Policy at the Institute of Psychology. She also holds the W.H. Duncan chair in Public Health and is Head of the World Health Organisation (WHO): Collaborating Centre for Policy Research on the Social Determinants of Health. Researchers involved in this programme are studying both the social causes of ill health and the adverse consequences of having a chronic illness. They are looking at ways in which health and social welfare systems themselves can improve ill health and health inequality among the population.

Whitehead has worked extensively on social inequalities in health and in health care, in particular the question of what can be done to reduce them. To this end, she has been involved in British and international efforts to reduce the inequality in public health by tracing the health inequalities impact of public policies and political context.
