Segers' research focuses on the history and prehistory of European integration and transatlantic relations. He investigates the historical roots of the modern EU and is, among other things, interested in the origins of the European Maastricht Treaty, with an emphasis on the European social market economy and the EU's position in international politics.

Since 2016, Segers has been working as professor of Contemporary European History and European Integration at Maastricht University. From 2008 to mid-2016, Segers was university lecturer in European Integration at Utrecht University.

Segers is also a member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), an advisory body to the Dutch government and parliament on important social issues.

In addition to his academic work, Segers is the author of the books Waagstuk Europa (2014) and Europa en de terugkeer van de geschiedenis (2016). Furthermore, Segers regularly participates in the public debate on European affairs with his columns in the Financieele Dagblad and the Groene Amsterdammer, his podcast Café Europa and articles in national newspapers about recent developments in European integration and the euro.

Segers’ onderzoek richt zich op de geschiedenis en prehistorie van Europese integratie en trans-Atlantische betrekkingen. Hij onderzoekt de historische wortels van de moderne EU en is onder andere geïnteresseerd in de oorsprong van het Europese Verdrag van Maastricht, met de nadruk op de Europese sociale markteconomie en de positie van de EU in de internationale politiek.

Sinds 2016 is Segers werkzaam als hoogleraar Hedendaagse Europese Geschiedenis en Europese Integratie aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Van 2008 tot medio 2016 was Segers hoofddocent Europese Integratie aan de Universiteit Utrecht.

Ook is Segers lid van de Wetenschappelijke raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (WRR), een adviesorgaan voor de Nederlandse regering en parlement over grote maatschappelijke vraagstukken.

Naast zijn academische werkzaamheden is Segers auteur van de boeken Waagstuk Europa (2014) en Europa en de terugkeer van de geschiedenis (2016). Verder mengt Segers zich regelmatig in het publieke debat rond Europese zaken, met zijn columns in het Financieele Dagblad en de Groene Amsterdammer, zijn podcast Café Europa en zijn artikelen in de landelijke kranten over recente ontwikkelingen in de Europese integratie en de euro.
