Wierenga wil begrijpen hoe het brein werkt en zich ontwikkelt. Daarvoor onderzoekt ze hoe zenuwcellen met elkaar communiceren. Bij leren en vergeten veranderen de verbindingen in het brein. Kennis hierover geeft meer inzicht in het ontstaan van bepaalde hersenaandoeningen zoals autisme, schizofrenie of Alzheimer.

Ze ontving in 2012 een NWO-ZonMW VIDI grant voor haar projectvoorstel 'Balancing the Brain: Local Interactions between Excitatory and Inhibitory Synapses'.

Wierenga studeerde natuurkunde aan de VU in Amsterdam, gevolgd door een PhD in neurobiologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Ze heeft daarna onderzoek gedaan in Boston (USA) en Munchen (Duitsland) en heeft sinds 2011 haar eigen onderzoeksgroep in Utrecht.

Neurobiologist dr. Corette Wierenga is an assistant professor at the Cell Biology department at Utrecht University. She studies the connections between neurons in the brain.

In order to understand the ways in which the brain works and develops, Wierenga investigates how neurons communicate with each other. When we learn or forget something, the connections between these neurons change. Her research gives more insight in certain brain disorders such as autism, schizophrenia or Alzheimer's.

In 2012 she received a ZonMW NWO Vidi grant for her project Balancing the Brain: Local Interactions between Excitatory and Inhibitory Synapses.

Corette Wierenga studied physics at the VU in Amsterdam and obtained a PhD (2002) in neurobiology at the University of Amsterdam. After her PhD she did research at Brandeis University in Boston and the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Munich. Since 2011, she has her own research group in Utrecht.
