Haar onderzoek bevindt zich op het snijvlak van documentaire studies, visuele studies, gender- en postkoloniale studies en cultuurstudies.

Olivieri promoveerde in 2012 aan de Universiteit Utrecht met haar proefschrift Haunted by reality.Toward a feminist study of documentary film: indexicality, vision and the artifice.Momenteel is ze bezig met de samenstelling en redactie van een speciaal nummer van Feminist Media Studies. Haar meest recente onderzoek richt zich o.a. op de praktijk van het documentaire maken.

Domitilla Olivieri is Assistant Professor at the department of Media and Culture at Utrecht University. Her research and didactics are in the field of documentary film, visual anthropology, visual studies, gender and postcolonial studies, and cultural studies.

She collaborates with festivals, community projects, NGOs and activists groups. Her research has been published in essay collections and journals, and she is now editing a special issue of Feminist Media Studies on “Affective Encounters: Tools of Interruption for Activist Media Practices.” Her latest work focuses on documentary film practices, spaces of the everyday, the politics of othering and mediated encounters, and 'rhythm' in documentary media.
